Hontek was founded in 1992 to conduct Small Business Innovation Research contracts for the United States Army, Navy and Air Force. Hontek has also maintained continuous self-funded R&D efforts to develop superior erosion resistant, and abrasion resistant coatings for aerospace, wind energy and industrial applications.
Among those developed under private funding is the Hontek HC05XP1 OEM coating system and field repair system, which was used to protect the expensive rotor blades of the Black Hawk helicopter. The coating system achieved a historical success in durability and ease of repair in the operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. See Awards section for details.
